Andreas Stoehr

Lecture (in English) on Theodor Storm’s “The Nightingale” (“Die Nachtigall”), a poem from Alban Berg’s “7 Early Songs.” The full cycle will be performed with the Yale Symphony Orchestra on Nov. 12th. The lecture will illustrate the musicality of poetry and the romantic composer’s transformation of words into music. Historical aspects will be discussed alongside the more general topic of onomatopoeia (“Lautmalerei”), for example in modern German and Austrian contemporary “sound poems” (“Lautgedichte”) by Ernst Jandl and Nora Gomringer.
