Janice Cheon

Janice joined the Departments of Germanic Languages & Literature and Film & Media Studies in Fall 2021. Her academic work broadly focuses on modalities and expressions of time in 19th and 20th century German media (i.e., film, literature, photography, sound objects). In a similar vein, she also interrogates questions of methodology by tracking temporal theories and philosophies—including, but not limited to, anachronism, primitivism, presentism, etc.—through modern thought that suggest alternative ways of finding affinities in arts and literature outside of established genres and periodization. Other interests include the European avant-garde, issues and representations of ecological change and violence, the relationship between media (theory) and science, Walter Benjamin, cats, and mezcal. 

 

Janice holds an MSt with Distinction in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford, where she was an Ertegun Scholar in the Humanities. She received her BA (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) in German Studies with minors in Music Performance, Medieval Studies, and Humanistic Studies from Princeton University.
