For Graduate Students only
Thanks to the generosity of the Max Kade Foundation, the Yale German Department offers a $1,200 stipend to support graduate students conducting German-related research in any field. The stipend may be used for travel, language course fees, accommodation, archival work, or other research projects in Germany.
Participants may choose from programs within the Baden-Württemberg August Programs, but any program lasting at least three weeks (45 hours) in Germany is eligible.
Alternatively, you can propose a German related study project.
Eligibility
This award is open to Yale graduate students interested in:
- Improving their German language skills
- Conducting research on German-related topics
Students from all fields of study and all levels of German proficiency—including beginners—are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to students enrolled in German Department courses or collaborating with German Department faculty.
Application Requirements
Applicants must submit a detailed travel and study proposal, including:
- A rationale for the project
- A budget
- Information on the language program they wish to attend (location, type of study, and program link) or the faculty and institution they will be working with

Application Timeline

Award Disbursement
The stipend is reimbursed after program completion. To receive funds, recipients must:
- Save and submit receipts for travel and program expenses
- Submit a statement reflecting on their experience in the semester following their travel
Selection & Notification
- Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by late March
- Recipients must confirm acceptance within two days of notification
